The Third Round Draw

The FA Cup Third Round draw is one of football's annual highlights. I remember watching the draw as a child around my grandads house willing Birmingham to be drawn against a Villa or United.

For me it's not the Coca Cola advert or the first play of Christmas songs that signals the start of the festive season - it's the FA Cup Third Round draw. And, unlike Christmas itself, the draw hasn't lost any excitement since my childhood.

So as Chappers welcomed us the start of the draw I couldn't wait to see who Colchester United would face.

We all fancied an away trip to a club that we hadn't been to before to make the road trip more exciting but as John Hartson pulled out ball number 59 he sealed our fate and we were heading back to Essex - to Colchester.

Mark Sampson then rounded off our tie pulling out Championship side Charlton Athletic.
Although it's not a 'sexy' tie and the match won't be shown on BBC it's certainly an interesting one. Both clubs have been struggling in their respective leagues and Colchester will fancy an upset.

However our man-of-the-match, Callum Harriott, who played a blinder against Altrincham will be ruled out of the game as he is on loan from Charlton. He will be a big blow to Colchester's chances.

More importantly though we are back to our comfortable position of supporting the underdog in our FA Cup story. It will make victory more sweet as the U's 'giant-kill' Charlton.

Up the U's!

Colchester Calling...

Well, well, well... this FA Cup is the gift that keeps on giving. Another incredible game between two sides giving it absolutely everything in the best competition in the world. This time Colchester out-fought Altrincham 3-2 with a last minute winner by Callum Harriott. A brilliant advert for the FA Cup.

For the first time since the 2nd Qualifying Round, all three of the lads were back together, this time for the 121 mile journey to the Weston Homes Community Stadium (another catchy stadium name). After watching the FA Cup games on Friday night and Saturday afternoon we were ready to watch some classic cup football.

We rocked up at the ground early enough to investigate what Colchester had to offer. The 'Legends Lounge' seemed awfully quiet and for a bit we pondered what a Colchester United legend actually was.

But soon enough we found the club shop which gave Liam a perfect excuse to look like a prat as he modelled the Colchester United away kit.
Who ate all the pies?
They have invented seats since our last game!
2pm seemed an odd time for kick-off and without a chance to grab some lunch at home we walked all the way around the stadium to try and find a burger van. After walking around two-thirds of the ground we stumbled across some of the weirdest pre-match entertainment. On a sleepy Sunday afternoon Colchester had decided to book a heavy-metal band who were playing from the inside of a container. The locals looked bemused by the whole thing whilst we quickly moved on in search of some lunch.

Nearing kick-off there was a sense of quiet confidence by the U's fans but there was nothing much quiet about the travelling support who were enjoying a bit of a FA Cup party in Essex.

The game itself was a belter and started off in lightning pace with a wonder goal from Jake Moult who put the underdogs ahead in three minutes with a 30 yard lob. I seriously doubt we will see a better goal in our FA Cup story.

Colchester levelled ten minutes later in an incredibly open first half which saw both teams go close to taking the lead again.

The second-half had barely even begun when Michael Rankine (former York City forward) put Alty ahead once more. Were Altricham going on a giant-killing once again, surely not?

But again Colchester were quick to level when Tom Lapslie headed in from short-range.

The second-half continued to produce chances for both teams but neither could grab a winner. Heading into injury-time the lads were debating whether they could make it to Altrincham for the Tuesday night replay.

Just as I had decided that I was going to take an extra day off work to make it up to Altrincham, Callum Harriott (who had been excellent all game) fired in a winner from for Colchester. It was so cruel on Altricham who deserved at least a draw out of the game but the lads didn't mind as they cheered with the rest of the home support chanting "We don't have to go to a replay!"

As I said Altrincham played superbly and it seemed really harsh to cheer the favourites as the dumped out a minnow (46 places below them). The Alty players had given it their all and were left sitting down on the pitch with the heads in their hands.

The lads with Eddie the Eagle
The journey back was filled with dreams of who Colchester will face in the Third Round. Whilst an away trip to either Birmingham or Middlesbrough (our own teams) would be fun, we couldn't help hope for a tie at Old Trafford or Anfield.

Up the U's!

Which is the oldest recorded town in Britain?

I have said previously that FA Cup draws are 'always' exciting. Well today was perhaps the drabbest draw of our FA Cup story so far.

As we settled in to watch Mark Chapman and co. draw out the remaining 40 teams in the FA Cup we were excited as to where we could go. Maybe an away trip to former FA Cup winners Portsmouth? Or an exciting tie versus Salford FC owned by the Class of '92.

But no... our next big adventure is Colchester vs. Altrincham.
'What's wrong with that?' you might ask.

Well firstly Colchester were drawn out at home. There is nothing wrong with Colchester but it doesn't immediately appeal when you head off on a road trip. A quick Google of Colchester revealed that it is Britain's oldest recorded town. Quite interesting. But that is about all that I can find that's interesting about Colchester. If anyone from Colchester passionately disagrees with me then we would welcome being shown around your beautiful town.

Although Altrincham are notable giant killers having beaten Barnsley in the First Round we are supposed to be supporting Colchester. This will go against all our in-grown British morals of support the underdog. What a dilemma. Although we call ourselves football fans I have to say that we know pretty much nothing about Altrincham - shocking, I know. So we call upon all Robins fan to help us out. Any famous players or interesting facts about Altrincham?

Our British morals will be something we will have to overcome when we make the 240 mile round trip to support the mighty U's!

The Wealdstone Return

After surviving the last 5 minutes of 'squeaky-bum-time' in the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round Wealdstone FC were in the hat for the First Round Proper and we were going to be there with them.

We pledged that we would go anywhere to watch Wealdstone march on to Wembley which is why we were pretty delighted when The Stones avoided an away match in Carlisle!

There is nothing quite like an FA Cup draw... the highs and the lows. The raw emotions of two men picking out balls from a bowl and reading out numbers. Wealdstone were ball number 69 and we had to wait until the penultimate ball to see them drawn out. A home tie - great news! A home tie versus.... Colchester United!

Wow we had really hit the big time now. Colchester United of League One were quite a difference from Shortwood United who we had been watching just three games previous.

Match day four arrived and we were off to Wealdstone. Or were we? A quick trawl through to Wealdstone FC official Twitter page left us feeling nervy about our prospects of seeing the boys in blue and white. There were limited tickets! That wasn't something we had planned.

With no way of getting to the ground until 2pm at the earliest we were in trouble. Until the man of the hour arrived. @samrumens on Twitter agreed to hold tickets for us at the gate so our FA Cup Story would continue for another day!

We arrived at the freebets.co.uk Stadium (extremely catchy title) and found our man Sam and gratefully parted with £15 each in return for the golden ticket to see Wealdstone v Colchester later.

But as we walked around the stadium there was more doubt as to whether we would actually see any football. It had been raining solidly for a couple of days and the pitch was sodden. Due to the very unique way the Wealdstone pitch lies all the water had trickled down into the corner leaving the groundsman with a lot of work to do before the game!

It's lucky the groundsman had watched a lot of Ground Force on catch up recently and he managed to save the day!

So with nothing else left to spoil the fun Liam and Dave chose their places to watch the game and to pose for a pre-match selfie with a brand new Wealdstone scarf!

The game itself was a belter, nothing less than we have been accustomed to in this years FA Cup. Colchester had an edge about them, something extra that Wealdstone didn't. You could see their superior quality and it paid off when eventually Bonne put the U's ahead.

This silenced the home faithful who had been in full voice beforehand. But they were soon to find their signing voices again as the referee awarded Wealdstone a penalty which veteran forward Jefferson Louis converted.

The boys in blue and white were cheered on by over 2,000 home fans when the unthinkable happened... Wealdstone took the lead thanks to Hudson-Odoi in 38th minute. Surely this wasn't going to happen?! Wealdstone FC of the National League South were beating Colchester United who were three divisions above them.

Now all Wealdstone needed to do was hold on to this lead for another 50 minutes - not long really! But despite valiant defending Wealdstone fell just short of the 50 minute target and succumbed to the Colchester pressure six minutes later.

Two minutes into the second half it went from bad to worse for Wealdstone as Bonne completed his hat-trick and the U's took a 3-2 lead. From then after both teams seemed to forget about defending and the remaining 40 minutes was a enthralling, end-to-end encounter in which Colchester came out 6-2 winners.

So okay it was a heavy loss for Wealdstone but The Stones should be proud. To lead against League One opposition showed great character. The performance and the game itself was a great advert for the FA Cup.

But while Wealdstone's cup run was over ours had just picked up speed. Now we would be following Colchester all the way to the final. Come on you U's!

From Wealdstone With Love

Okay I have to admit, the lads were a bit disappointed that Oxford City had been knocked out. Marsh Lane (home of City) is a 5 minute drive but a 'home' draw at Bognor would be another 2 hour drive!

But nonetheless the lads went wholeheartedly into the draw for the 4th Round Qualifying to see who our beloved Bognor Regis Town FC would face.

Following the FA Cup draw on Twitter isn't fun but it's what you have to do if you are at work. But starring at the screen for 40 minutes waiting was made worthwhile when Bognor drew an away tie to Wealdstone FC...

Three years ago only a die-hard football fan would probably know Wealdstone FC but thanks to one man the non-league club are now definitely on the footballing map. That man is The Wealdstone Raider!

Matchday arrived and the boys were excited what the town of Wealdstone had to offer. After a short trip down the M40 we were a little surprised to find that The Stones don't actually play in Wealdstone but down the road in Ruislip!

What was more surprising however was that The Wealdstone Raider had now been given cult status at Wealdstone and led out the team to upbeat music - very odd but very inspiring!

Ben and Dave found a spot on the touch line next to some die-hard Bognor Regis fans dressed head-to-toe in green and white. The fans discussed every single player on the pitch, citing all their past clubs and there best attributes. Non-league fans are the best!

The Stones vs. The Rocks

The game took a while to build pace but when it did it was fascinating. Both teams properly going for it and forgetting all about their defensive duties.

Bognor had bought a bunch of very noisy fans up from the south coast and the atmosphere inside the Freebets.co.uk Stadium was brilliant - just how an FA Cup match should be - friendly, loud and passionate.

Those Bognor fans exploded with excitment when the ref awarded them a penalty just before half-time. But a fantastic save by the Wealdstone keeper denied them a half-time lead.

The 2nd half saw Wealdstone make their superior quality show as they raced into a comfortable 2-0 lead. But again the FA Cup didn't disappoint and Bognor were awarded another penalty, a way back into the game? But no! Incredibly the keeper pulled out another top-drawer save to keep a two goal advantage.

The last 10 minutes were frantic as Bognor finally got on the score sheet but the famous comeback wasn't to be. It would be Wealdstone who would progress to the First Round proper!

Come on you Stones!

To Bognor and Back

When thinking about the FA Cup, one instantly conjures up images of fairy-tale giant-killings and enthralling comebacks. So what better way to continue our story than a ‘giant-killing’ of our own as Ryman League outfit Bognor Regis Town put out Oxford City who were a full 26 places above them.

The draw for the 3rd Qualifying Round Qualifying pulled out an interesting away trip to the small seaside resort on the south coast - Bognor Regis.

Matchday arrived and the Cup Trio turned into a Cup Duo as Liam 'had to do some work'. After a two-and-a-half hour trip down the M3 we made it to Bognor Regis, home of Butlins and the International Birdman Competition.

Ben and I did as any tourist would and headed straight for the beach and bought some fish and chips. As fish and chips went, they were decidedly dodgy and tasted a bit like the stuff you get from Iceland. After a little wander down the seafront and up the pier we headed to the Nyewood Lane to cheer on Oxford on their journey to Wembley.

At the ground we met up with the lads from the Oxford Brookes Non-League Society who were in full voice as per usual. Songs such as "All you need is Bubb" and "Hoops Upside Your Head" rung round the Lane for all supporters to here.

An early goalkeeping error from Bognor delighted the travelling fans as Bradley Bubb put Oxford 1-0 up and surely on the way to the 4th Qualifying Round.

But Bognor Regis fought back with all the passion and skill that has made the FA Cup so famous.

They ran Oxford ragged in the 2nd half and came from 1-2 down to thrash Oxford 4-2. The home fans were left delirious whilst the travelling support acknowledged a brilliant battle from Bognor.

Not the result Ben and Dave expected or wanted at the start of the game but now we were Bognor Regis fans through and through! Up the Rocks!

The Story Begins

All good stories must have a beginning, middle and end. Our story begins on a sunny late September afternoon at Marsh Lane in Oxford - home of Oxford City FC.

The lads decided to go and watch a bit of non-league football (for a laugh) and went down to see Oxford City take on Shortwood United in the FA Cup.

The game itself wasn't that interesting. It finished 2-1 to the Vanarama National South team, Oxford City which meant they progressed through to the FA Cup 3rd Round Qualifying.

But what was more important was a idea suggested by one of the guys. It was suggested that we would follow Oxford City all the way to Wembley in the FA Cup. And if any team should beat them on their way to the final we would turn our attention on them and follow them.

So the idea was planted in our minds and after the game we made a pact that we would do everything possible to follow the best competition in the world all around the country.

All good stories must have a beginning, middle and end. Our story began in Oxford and would end at Wembley in May but the middle was as yet undecided!
The story begins...
